Our Company History

January 1983 The Print People was established by Thomas Montgomery as a trade printing company.

January 1992 Steady growth lead to the foundation of the Montgomery Litho Group with the purchase of new premises in Hyde Park Street and an investment of over £1 million in new plant and machinery. This investment included the installation of our first 4 colour B2 press and larger format folding equipment.

1993 The first of many aquisitions for Montgomery Litho Group was in 1993 when the Group bought over SL Printing Services (Scottish Legal Life Print Department) The name of the Company was changed to Cityprint Services.

July 1994 The group acquired M & M Press, taking our largest sheet size to B1.

April 1996 Further expansion allowed us to move to a modern custom built factory in Elliot Street.

March 1997 Due to ever increasing demand for pre-press and origination, the group bought a share in Opticol Ltd, a young and innovative reprographics company based in Glasgow. Later that year, the group purchased Arneg, the longest established reprographics company in Scotland.

August 1997 MLG acquired The Edinburgh Press, formerly Bartholomew, a world-renowned cartographic brand. The large-format presses enabled MLG to establish a foothold into the mainstream publishing and publications markets.

January 1998 Digital Imaging was formed out of the two reprographics companies, bringing together the wealth of experience of Arneg, and the cutting edge technology of Opticol. Digital Imaging soon joined The Print People at the new premises at Elliot Street.

June 1999 MLG bought Scotprint, a renowned book printer, which had been serving mainstream publishing markets for over 18 years.

November 2000 Scotprint and the Edinburgh Press were brought together into extensive new premises at Gateside Commerce Park, Haddington, to form the new Scotprint. Investment in brand new CtP and press technology at the new site has placed Scotprint at the forefront of the UK book and publication markets.

January 2002 City Print Services, a long standing member of the group, installed the first SRA3 Indigo digital press in Scotland, allowing the group to offer short run, cost effective, full colour printing and personalisation.

November 2002 Hunter & Foulis, a speciality binding company, joined the group, perfectly complementing the publishing element of the group.

May 2005 The group invested £2 million in a Heidelberg SM102P 10 colour perfector B1 press with CutStar. The press is located at Elliot Street in Glasgow.  June 2005 The group acquired the Scottish printing department of insurance company Norwich Union. The new acquisition is named MLG Perth. It’s central location ideally complements the east and west locations of other companies within the group.

June 2006 Hunter & Foulis install a Kolbus/Sigloch In-Line Book Production System. The system, which is the first of its kind in the UK, is designed to meet the demands of the fast-turnaround market.

April 2007 The Print People, M&M Press and Digital Imaging combine forces to form MLG Glasgow. The amalgamation saw continued investment in plant and machinery.

June 2008 saw the largest investment in a single year for the Group with the installation at Scotprint of a Roland 904 and Roland 710 at a cost of over £4m. This compliments the £1.5m investment in a Muller Martini Bolero binding line at Hunter & Foulis and £400k MBO T142 folder at Scotprint.

January 2009 saw the launch of MLG Edinburgh. Investment was made in digital and mailing equipment which includes Xerox 700 full colour digital, 2 x Nuvera 288 high speed laser printers. A full list can be found in the plant list.

March 2009 MLG Marketing Solutions was created with the aim of increasing MLG’s share in the digital printing market.

August 2009 saw City Print move to Elliot Street. It now trades under the MLG Glasgow umbrella.
